Portfolio One, published by the RPS

Two Tasteful Images are included in the Royal Photographic Society's newly published book Portfolio One.

This limited edition, high quality, hard bound volume covers "current styles and trends within the Society and the photography of its members ... as well as being a record of the Society at this time". Its 240 pages include portfolios by Honorary Fellows, illustrated articles, selected images from recent Society exhibitions and photographs from recent successful Licentiateship, Associateship and Fellowship applications. Seventy pages are given over to a members' gallery, and among the images published are Paper Flame 2 and Y.

Portfolio One can be purchased directly from the RPS at a price of £30 plus postage and packing (£25 +p&p for orders received by 30 October 2007) by visiting the RPS's website.

Spectrum 1

Priorsfield School in Godalming, Surrey held an art auction in order to raise funds for a new library. The school approached a number of local artists for various works of art and we were pleased to donate a framed print of Spectrum 1.

The auction raised over £5,000 to help refit and equip an impressive new library, which is due to open in time for the start of the Autumn term. We wish them every success with this project.

Paper Flame 2

The new year has started well with six images being accepted at the 94th Southampton International Exhibition 2007. Among them is Paper Flame 2, which received its second gold medal - this time a PSA Gold Medal recognising it as the most creative colour print. Last August it gained a similar award at Edinburgh.

The prints selected will be exhibited on 12 March 2007 at Copythorne Village Hall, Copythorne, Southampton, SO40 2NF.

Fading Away

Four acceptances at the 32nd Smethwick International Exhibition of Photography have rounded off a highly successful year for Tasteful Images, bringing to 19 the number of acceptances achieved in national and international exhibitions this year. The prints accepted are listed on the Salons page.

Particularly pleasing was the fact that Fading Away has been awarded a Selector's Medal, identifying it, in the opinion of one of the three judges, as the best out of nearly 1,500 colour prints submitted.

The selected images will be exhibited from 6 to 14 January 2007 at The Old School House, Churchbridge, Oldbury, West Midlands. Details of opening times and admission charges are available at www.theoldschoolhouse.com/ smethwick/ times07.doc.

Paper Flame 2

The Edinburgh International Exhibition of Photography has awarded a FIAP Gold Medal to Paper Flame 2. Out of nearly 3,500 prints submitted from over 50 countries, just 217 were chosen to be hung in the exhibition. Each member of the three-strong panel of selectors awarded a FIAP Gold Medal to one print, and Rikki O'Neil FRPS MPAGB chose Paper Flame 2 "for its simplicity, the beautiful flow of the lines and the subtle colour content".

The exhibition runs from 6 August to 3 September 2006 and takes place at The Edinburgh Photographic Centre, 68 Great King Street, Edinburgh. Further details of the exhibition are available from the Edinburgh Photographic Society's website

Woodland Dreams 3

A unique photographic auction and draw called Living Exposure is taking place in aid of Help The Hospices. Following a successful event in 2005, which raised over £70,000, members of the Association of Photographers (AoP), the British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP), the Master Photographers Association (MPA) and the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) were again invited to donate a selection of contemporary Fine Art photographs.

Woodland Dreams 3 was one of the images selected by the panel of judges, which included Roger Reynolds HonFRPS, past president of the RPS. Along with other successful entries it will be exhibited at Bonhams, New Bond Street, London on 27 July.

This is one of a series of photographs of "trees" that can be seen in the Hallway.

Frozen Flowers

The Princess Alice Hospice at Esher, Surrey, has selected a range of artworks by local artists for display including four Tasteful Images. These are to be hung in its newly-redeveloped buildings which are due to open in June 2006.

The selection comprises:

• Floral Flames I, II, and III all mounted in a single frame;
• Frozen Poppy, Borage, Ivy and Poppies all mounted in one frame;
• Paper Flame 2;
• Marble Tonic.

In a recent competition run by Practical Photography, the UK's best-selling photographic magazine, John's image Turning Back II perfectly fitted the theme of The Human Body. From several thousand entries this was selected as a runner-up.

The photograph was published in the May 2006 issue of Practical Photography, page 87.

Here is what the judges had to say about it: "John's 'body as landscape' take on the theme couples a curvaceous posterior with subtle lighting against a black background and is a great attempt at a very difficult subject. Top marks for effort."
